Kaka in controversial church finance link
Thursday, January 10, 2008
A Brazilian judge has asked Kaka to explain his connection to a an evangelical church whose leaders have pled guilty to charges of money smuggling...
The player himself has not been accused of any crime and faces no charges for now, but has been asked to provide information to the authorities.
The Associated Press cites Brazilian news magazine 'Carta Capital', which claims that leaders of the "Reborn in Christ Church" have misused congregational donations to buy mansions and horse ranches.
The church founders, Estevam Hernandes Filho and Sonia Haddad Moraes Hernandes, were imprisoned for almost five months after pleading guilty to trying to smuggle $56,000 into the USA.
Kaka gas stated in the past that he donates to the church on an annual basis, with Carta Capital speculating that he's given them a figure in the region of $1mil.
Judge Marcelo Batlouni thus has asked Kaka how close he is to the church owners, whether or not he visited their home, and whether he knew that they were under arrest.
The devout Brazilian, who it must be stressed is under no charge at the moment, has so far declined to reply.
The player's and Milan's lawyers are looking at the situation, and formulating an appropriate response, so that the player's season is not affected by this.
